Developing Educational Spaces for New Communities of Musical Practices: Ghanaian Highlife Music 21.11. – 01.12.2023 University of Siegen
While Afrobeat or Afropop has become popular in Europe,
interested European listeners may wonder to what extent they
could themselves become practically involved in such musics.
The workshop seminar offers a unique opportunity for exploring
this question: A group of students from the music department of
University of Ghana, Accra, will visit the University of Siegen
together with their teacher, Dr. Eyram Fiagbedzi, for a joint
practical, pedagogical, and academic study of Highlife Music,
the Ghanaian strand of West African popular music.
Both groups of students, the participants from University of
Siegen and those from University of Ghana, will join in
a three-day workshop with rehearsing Highlife Music,
talk groups and social events. This part will end with
a joint concert at the University of Siegen.
Furthermore, students at the University of Siegen are offered
various additional opportunities (see below) to join other
activities of the group from University of Ghana during their
stay.
